Your files stay on your phone. File Vault has no account, no server of its own, no internet access, no advertising and no analytics. The developer cannot see your files or your PIN and receives nothing from the app.
When you add a photo, video or document, File Vault encrypts it (AES-256) and saves the encrypted copy in the app's private storage on your device. The encryption key is protected by your PIN (PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256) and the phone's secure storage (Android Keystore). Nothing is uploaded anywhere. The app does not request the internet permission, so it cannot send data over the network.
Adding a file to the vault does not delete the original. The original stays where it was on your phone until you delete it yourself.
If you leave Auto backup on (it is on by default; you can switch it off in Settings), File Vault keeps one encrypted backup file on your phone at Downloads/FileVault/FileVault-backup.fvb, so you can restore the vault after reinstalling. The backup is locked with your PIN. It stays on your device unless you choose to copy or share it, for example with "Share backup file" to Google Drive, email or another app. Anything you send to another app is handled by that app under its own policy. Android's own cloud backup of the app's data is switched off.
No account, no personal information, no analytics, no crash-reporting service, no advertising or advertising ID, and no tracking. Nothing is sold or shared with third parties, because nothing is collected.
You can refuse biometrics and still unlock with your PIN.
Screenshots, screen recording and the "recent apps" preview are blocked inside File Vault. The vault locks when you leave the app unless you choose a longer auto-lock time. The optional decoy PIN opens a separate, empty vault; it is stored only on your device.
Your PIN and the one-time recovery code are never sent anywhere and the developer cannot recover them. If you lose both, your files and your backup cannot be decrypted. After several wrong PIN attempts the app locks for a period of time.
Deleting a file inside the app removes its encrypted copy. Uninstalling File Vault permanently deletes the vault and its encryption key from the phone. The backup file in Downloads is not removed by uninstalling; delete Downloads/FileVault yourself if you do not want to keep it. Any copy you shared to another app or service must be deleted there.
File Vault is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone.
